National Night Out event is August 5th

The National Night Out event, which has been a huge neighborhood success in bringing neighbors together, is scheduled for the evening of August 5th this year. Everyone is encouraged to bring a small appetizer or desert. The Hiltonia Association will provide soda, water, juice, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Hopefully Boomer, of the Trenton Thunder will be able to attend.

Annual Hiltonia Garden Party on July 19th at 5 pm

Thanks to the gracious offer of Ali and Kim Wilson, the annual Hiltonia Garden Party will be held on Saturday, July 19th starting at 5 pm. The address is 111 Kensington Ave and everyone is asked to bring an appetizer or main course item to feed roughly 6 - 8 people. Please bring your item in a container that can be thrown out or have it clearly marked. Deserts, as well as refreshments will be provided by the Hiltonia Association.

Neighborhood Flea Market on Saturday, June 21st

It is time for a home made version of Clean House. Or perhaps you need a few extra items for your own collections. In any case, Hiltonia's annual flea market is set for June 21st this year. Several other neighborhoods will be joining in on the same day as well. The sales start at 8:00am, but expect some people to be hawking the neighborhood earlier. Remember, most sales are usually very early on.

The Hiltonia Association is making arrangements for someone to pick up any unsold items at the end of the day. In the event of rain, the yard sale will be held the next day, Sunday the 22nd.

5/2 - 5/4 Trenton Film Festival

In May 2004 the first Trenton Film Festival was held with the goal of bringing filmmakers and film viewers together to appreciate the art of filmmaking, a unique American art form. Staff members, volunteers, and audiences worked together in achieving this goal and making the festival a huge success. During these past five years the number of people helping or attending the festival is only increasing.

Some 80 films will be screened as part of the 2008 festival, a wide variety from very short animated films to professional feature length. This yearâ€™s opening film will be The 4th Dimension, labeled by Filmadelphia â€˜an ambitiously stylish sci-fi mysteryâ€™ by Philadelphia filmmakers Tom Mattera and Dave Mazzoni. The closing film will be The Flyboys, a narrative feature from Rocco Devilliers which brings action, adventure and intrigue to the next level!

You can check out the schedule here. Films will be screened at three venues this years, Masonic Temple Auditorium, Contemporary Club Auditorium and Broad Street Bank, all within walking distance of each other and S. Warren Street, where you will find a number of places to shop or eat. Volunteers will be at each venue in order to help you find your way around.

A bunch of neighbors from Hiltonia were among the hundreds of volunteers that were responsible for making the first Art All Night such a success. This year's event is right around the corner (June 21-22)! Please consider donating a couple of hours of your time to help out. Read more below.

Art All Night Trenton 2008 is produced by an all volunteer staff. If you’re interested in art, see art as an engine of urban renewal, or just want to meet new, interesting people, then we hope you’ll share your time and talent with us.

There are many volunteer positions available – each requiring different skills and time commitments.

VOLUNTEER AT THE EVENT - 3 Hour Shifts
Art All Night Trenton requires an army of volunteers to ensure that the event runs smoothly. And Just like Uncle Sam, Art All Night Trenton 2008 NEEDS YOU! You’re sure to have a great time and you get a free “Art All Night Trenton 2008” T-shirt too!

Most volunteers will be asked to watch over the art on display. Others will be needed to staff the information table, sell t-shirtsor manage the parking.

Why not organize a contingent of your officemates or a bunch of neighbors to take on a specific shift? Don’t be afraid to volunteer as a single person either – last year two single volunteers met at Art All Night and are still dating to this day!

Hiltonia Garden Cleanup Day 4/5 10am to Noon

For anyone who is interested in helping, we will be doing a clean up of the Hiltonia Garden, this Saturday, April 5th from 10:00 am until noon. We will have coffee and other refreshments on hand.

We will also discuss our big picture plans for the Hiltonia garden and hopefully come up with some direction, and perhaps a general plan.

We will be doing our planting on a subsequent Saturday based on our general plan and last frost date. We will try to determine the planting date(s)

when we clean up this Saturday. If anyone has gardening expertise to share, would like to help with the cleanup, have some creative input,
or just want to hang out with your neighbors, it would be much appreciated if you could stop by the garden between 10 am and noon this Saturday.

Feel free to bring any gardening tools that you may have. We are also looking for appropriate plantings, bulbs, seeds, clones, etc that anyone would like to share to be placed in the
garden, (we won't need them until the planting day). We will meet at the garden at 10:00 am this Saturday. If you have any questions, you can call Bill Merz at 394-8816 or Scott Albert at 915-0032. Also, many thanks to Scott Albert and Donna Garcia for organizing this effort.

Former VP of Central Park Conservancy To Speak on Future of Cadwalader Park April 4th

Hiltonia Children's Annual Easter Egg Hunt Set for Saturday, March 15th

The Hiltonia Children's Annual Easter Egg Hunt has been set for Saturday, March 15th starting at 1:00 PM. Please arrive a little early to make sure that we can get the hunt off on time. It will be hosted again this year by Rochelle Ellis and Lucy Strauli at 103 Buckingham (the corner of Buckingham and Stanley). The age groups are from toddler up to 10 years old. In the event of rain, the Easter Bunny will hand out candies inside.

The Hiltonia Association's March General Meeting will be held on a Wednesday, March 12 at 7:30 pm. It will be hosted Michael Nalbone and Michael Ashworth at 10 Buckingham Ave. In addition to the business meeting, Michael Gumpert of Artworks will provide details on an event, "Art All Night" and a representative from the Trenton Thunder will be on hand to provide details on the upcoming season and ticket deals.

Mercer County to Offer Four-Part Lawn Care Course

As spring approaches many people will have questions about what should be done to have a nice lawn in 2008 and still maintain a healthy environment. A four-part course, The Basics of Successful Lawn Care, will be offered at the Mercer County Extension office for professionals in the lawn care industry and for homeowners who care for their own lawns or hire maintenance companies.

The classes will be held on Feb 13, 20, and 27 and March 5 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Pesticide re-certification credits are being offered. The charge will be $12.00 per class or $40 for all four to cover the cost of printed handouts and refreshments.

Lecturer Barbara J. Bromley, Mercer County Horticulturist, has divided the course into 4 parts. Each session stands alone, but there will be references to material learned in earlier classes.

Part 1 is Management Strategies and Selection of Grasses. This will cover determining lawn maintenance levels, characteristics of cool and warm season grasses grown in New Jersey, soil testing, and understanding the basic grass requirements of light, water, and soil.

Part 2 is Basic Maintenance, IPM-Based Practices. This includes mowing, edging, soil testing, fertilizing, liming, and watering.

Part 3 is Pest Control and Troubleshooting. This class will cover the identification and control of insects, diseases, and weeds.

Part 4 is Lawn Renovation and Establishment. Included in this class is how to renovate a damaged lawn or establish a new lawn on bare soil by seeding or sodding. Also included will be environmental factors that damage turf.

NJDEP Pesticide Recertification Credits available for certified pest control operators are 4 for category 3B and 4 for PP2 for part 1 and part 3. There will be 2 credits for category 3B and 2 for PP2 for part 2 and part 4. Total credits for all 4 classes: 12 each for categories 3B and PP2.

All classes will be held at the Extension office. There is ample parking.

10/19 "An Evening in the Park" The City of Trenton and the Cadwalader Park Alliance present with renowned architect, historian, and University of Pennsylvania Professor of Urbanism, Witold Rybczynski. Mr. Rybczynski, will discuss Olmsted and his legacy on Friday, October 19, 2007 at 7 pm at the Trenton City Museum Ellarslie Mansion, Cadwalader Park, Parkside Avenue entrance.

Mr. Rybczynski wrote the definitive book on Olmsted, A Clearing in the Distance: Frederick Law Olmsted and America in the Nineteenth Century. Olmsted designed Cadwalader Park, Central Park, the Biltmore Estate, and campus grounds of the Lawrenceville School, in Lawrenceville, NJ. The visual presentation and lecture are free and open to the public. Books are available for purchase and signing.
